A dog-friendly patio can mean many things. Sometimes it is a single sidewalk table where your dog spends dinner wedged between a planter and a passing stroller. At the best places, the welcome feels considerably more natural: there is room beneath the table, water appears before you have to ask, and no one seems surprised that your dog has joined you for the afternoon.
Chicago does this particularly well. There are sprawling patios where dogs are part of the scenery, neighborhood bars where they are treated like regulars, and restaurants with menus designed expressly for the four-legged person at the table. The right choice depends less on who has placed a water bowl outside and more on the kind of outing you have in mind.

Parson’s is the Chicago classic: picnic tables, frozen drinks, fried chicken, and enough room for the dog to settle in properly. All of its Chicago patios welcome dogs. Big Star’s Wicker Park patio is livelier, with tacos, margaritas, and a parade of neighborhood dogs passing through. For something more relaxed, The Moonlighter pairs a generous dog-friendly patio with cocktails, cold beer, burgers, and the comfortable feeling of a very good neighborhood hangout.

A Proper Beer Garden
Cold pints, room to settle in
Half Acre’s Balmoral beer garden is the polished choice for people who care about what is in the glass as much as where they are sitting; its outdoor garden welcomes leashed dogs. Begyle is smaller and more neighborhood-minded, with a weather-dependent dog-friendly patio beside the taproom. Downtown, The Northman offers cider, beer, and cocktails directly on the Riverwalk in an easygoing setting where dogs are welcome and the city provides the backdrop.

When the Dog Gets a Menu
A little something for everyone
At The Perch, the dog menu includes a power bowl, brunch scramble, pupsicles, biscuits, and even a chicken-stock “Hefe-woof-zen.” Barrio gives dogs the full River North treatment with grilled meats and dairy-free dessert, with a portion of canine-menu proceeds supporting PAWS Chicago. Siena Tavern’s “Puppy Ciao” menu makes it an equally convincing choice when the humans want pasta, cocktails, and a proper dinner of their own.

The Neighborhood Regular
No occasion required
Cody’s Public House is the rare bar where dogs are welcome inside and out. There is no kitchen, so bringing dinner or ordering it to the bar is encouraged — a detail that makes it particularly easy to settle in. In Hyde Park, The Promontory’s dog-friendly patio is a natural second stop after a walk by the lake. Farther north, Bar on Buena offers the simple pleasure of a neighborhood pub, a seasonal sidewalk patio, and no need to turn the outing into an event.
